dated August 12, 1955: Promotion of fine arts

The Chairman of the Central Sangeet Natak Akadami, Mr. P.V. Rajamannar, has said that the setting up of standards in fine arts should not be on a democratic principle but on the basis of "aristocracy of taste." He was speaking at the inauguration of the Madras State Sangita Nataka Sangham at the Annamalai Mandram, Madras, on August 10. Mr. Sri Prakasa, Governor of Madras, inaugurating the Sangham, explained the role of fine arts in promoting cultural unity. Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, who was also present, suggested that films be excluded from the purview of the Sangham's activities. Prime Minister Nehru, in his message, said: "I welcome these developments in India to encourage music and dance and to preserve our classical arts. South India has had the privilege and honour of keeping this old flame alight and burning." Earlier, after nadaswaram by Mr. T.N. Rajarathnam Pillai, the invocation song was sung by Smt. D.K. Pattammal. Smt. Rukmini Devi, Chairman of the Sangham, welcoming the gathering, commended the idea of the Government taking up the task of promoting fine arts, once patronised by kings. Art was the result of individual genius and the Sangham should help every individual in his creative activities.
