Sibal clarifies on calendric dates

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Science and Technology Minister, Kapil Sibal, said on Thursday that the Centre has introduced the "Nirayana" calendric dates, based on solstice, in the national calendar as an additional information only and not as a substitute for the "Sayana" solar system, which is based on equinox.

The "Nirayana" system has been introduced as an additional feature only for the sake of unification of divergent practices followed by regional "panchang" makers.

The "Sayana" system is scientifically correct and has remained in the national calendar as the best option, he said, in reply to a written question in the Rajya Sabha.
