WE WANT TEACHERS: A group of students holding a demonstration, demanding appointment of teachers in their school. Photo: S. Ramesh Kurup
At least some students take strikes as an opportunity to skip classes. But a group of students of Manhakadavu Government Lower Primary School in Koodaranji Gram Panchayat area in Kozhikode held a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Director of Education, demanding appointment of teachers in their school so that classes are held properly. Two posts of teacher have been vacant in the school, and steps have not been taken to fill them even two months into the current academic year. The school is the only avenue for learning for students, including those from tribal colonies, in the hilly areas of Manhakadavu, Perumbool and Chulliyakom. Without adequate number of teachers, the school has been seeing an `exodus' of students to other institutions. The parents are worried that the school may be closed down on the ground that it does not have adequate student strength.
