SALEM: It is a small wall hanging. But almost all the visitors, who visit the North East Crafts Fair 2005 at Deiveegam Marriage Hall, find it difficult to take their eyes off from it, since it is crafted elegantly. It has a number of leaves and two bunches of grape, all carved from the Gambari wood from Assam, and arranged on a red backdrop made of bamboo. And one can dismantle and rearrange the woodcarvings of the wall hanging to his taste. It costs Rs. 140. The fair also hosts an array of crafts made of bamboo - tiny mugs to artistic caps, flower vases to chairs and tables. Even the traditional bamboo beer mugs, exhibited at the fair, have been given a fresh look. They have beautiful sceneries and figures on a shiny outer surface. The fair also includes a vast variety of decorative items, toys and dolls made of straw and clay, tribal ornaments made of cane, glass beads, carpets using dragon, geometric and floral motifs. Kauna grass cushions, mattress and quilted cotton materials (called Laishingfee) from Manipur, Endi silk weaving from Mizoram, brass and bell metals, textiles goods with extraordinary embroidery works, handlooms and terracotta are also on the display. The fair, organised by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation, is on till August 20.
