Proposal on Gulbarga airport to be taken up after signing pact with State, says Praful Patel

GULBARGA: The Union Government has decided to convert the two-lane national highway from Humnabad in Bidar district to Hyderabad, under a programme to upgrade national highways, into a four-lane express highway.

Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping K.H. Muniappa, made the announcement at the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKCCI) here led by the Gulbarga MP Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi and Bidar MP Narasingh Suryavanshi.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, president of HKCCI Suresh Nandyal and secretary Umakanth Nigudgi said the delegation requested the Minister to convert the existing inter-State highway from Ribbanpalli in Andhra Pradesh to Waghdhari in Maharshtra, which passes through the district, as the conversion will make access to National Highway 7 and National Highway 9 easier. Mr. Nandyal said the Minister, who spoke to senior officials, said if the State Government upgrades the inter-State highway, the Union Government will convert it to a national highway. The delegation also met with Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel, and submitted a memorandum demanding approval for the proposal on the Gulbarga Airport. Mr. Patel said the proposal will be taken up after signing a memorandum of understanding with the State Government. The Minister said though the Civil Aviation Ministry is keen that the MoU be signed at the earliest, the response from the State Government is not forthcoming. He promised the delegation a decision on the construction of an airstrip at Gulbarga will be taken up soon. The delegation also called on Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu and demanded that a Railway Divisional headquarters be established in Gulbarga. The delegation asked the Minister to expedite work on the Gulbarga-Bidar rail line, convert the Bijapur-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly train service into daily service and introduce three more bogies in the Udhyan Express. The delegation also urged the Minister to divert the Rajdhani Express and Kranti Express, which passes through Wadi junction, to Gulbarga Railway Station.
