ERODE: More than 12 feet of water has been released from the 38 feet high Orathupalayam reservoir based on the recommendation of the expert panel, constituted by the Madras High Court. Due to large-scale stagnation of contaminated textile effluents in the reservoir, the High Court had formed an expert committee headed by the Retired Chief Engineer, PWD, S. Sivaraman. Accordingly, 900 cusecs of contaminated water was released from August 7, which would be stopped on August 12. On Friday, suddenly the release has been reduced to 700 cusecs. The Collector said that following a directive from the Government, the release had been reduced and the villagers on the banks of the Noyyal river had been alerted not to use the water for domestic purposes. Now, 26 feet of water is stored in the reservoir and further release would be made again on August 19.
