ERODE: A good book reforms a man and makes him great, said the Correspondent of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, P.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, on Thursday while speaking at a book festival organised by the People Thinkers' Forum. He urged the youth to be patriotic and be ready to sacrifice for the country. "Each person should strive for social development," he added. Appealing to the people of Erode to visit the 10-day book festival, he said that the visitors should buy at least one book each, as lakhs of books for different categories of readers are on display. He urged the educational institutions to bring their students to the festival and encourage them to develop reading habit.
`Serve the country'
Quoting the select essays of Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he wanted the students and youths to serve the country. Inaugurating the fair, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said he could become an IAS officer by going to libraries and reading books. He wanted the parents to inculcate reading habit in children. Now, students were hooked to television channels, he said and hoped that soon they would defect to book reading. because of attending the libraries and reading books, he would become an IAS office. Presiding over the function, the Correspondent of Sengunthar Educational Institutions said that in every house a mini library could be formed with at least 20 select books. The Superintendent of Police, P. Balasubramanian, the president of South India Book Publishers and Sellers Association, R. Muthukunmarasamy and the Chief Educational Officer, P. Kuppusamy, also spoke. The organiser of the expo and president of People Thinkers' Forum, T. Stalin Gunasekaran, said that it was the first time such a book festival was organised in Erode. A total of 75 bookstalls have been set up at the venue and in the evenings, eminent cultural and Tamil speakers will address the gathering. Ten per cent discount will be given for all the books and for educational institutions and libraries, it will be 20 per cent. "It has been planned to conduct the fair every year," he added.
