More power for Maneka's show

Delhi is getting all dressed up to lend a helping hand to its animals, and leading from the front in this endeavour is the chairperson of People for Animals, Maneka Gandhi.

The Capital will be playing host to a unique photo exhibition that has already enlisted 250 photographers from India and abroad and will present 2,500 images that will be thrown open to the public at Maurya Sheraton on World Photography Day (August 19).

The proceeds from the three-day photo sale organised by People for Animals will go into setting up animal hospitals in Kerala and Dehra Dun. With the pre-sale of the photographs that are to be exhibited -- based on the theme "India", capturing the country in its various moods and perspective -- having already netted a neat sum of Rs. 52 lakhs, the exhibition is already doing well.

But the exhibition will do more than just collect money for helping animals in distress as it is aimed also at providing an international platform to youngsters.

"The exhibition will also provide for new and relatively unknown artists to share platform with colleagues of international standing which would be a great learning experience for them," says Ms. Gandhi, adding that "the audience would also get a mix of' `new energy' and old hand expertise'."

The exhibition will, however, not entertain works of very new photographers.

As Ms. Gandhi said, "there was simply no time for us to go through entries of very raw photographers and guide them around the theme."

"While giving youngsters a platform hasn't been the primary aim of the project, we are aware of the positive effect and energy that such a move would have on the exhibition," she added. — Bindu Shajan Perappadan
