Decision to oust Siddaramaiah was autocratic: M.C. Nanaiah

Special Correspondent

A new political party is needed in State, says the former minister

BANGALORE: The former Law Minister M.C. Nanaiah has held the former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President H.D. Deve Gowda as being solely responsible for ouster of Siddaramaiah from the leadership of legislature party.

Mr. Nanaiah, who participated in the inauguration of a conference hall at the Legislators' Home here on Thursday, told presspersons that Mr. Deve Gowda's style of functioning will not help the party in the long run. The decision to remove Mr. Siddaramaiah as legislature party leader was autocratic.

Mr. Nanaiah, who has kept himself aloof from the Janata Dal factions, said that Mr. Deve Gowda himself had participated in several rallies organised by caste-based organisations. What wrong did Mr. Siddaramaiah commit by participating in a convention of backward classes and minorities in Hubli?, he asked.

No leadership

The former minister compared Mr. Deve Gowda to Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thakarey and said both of them impose decisions on their parties. There is no leadership in the Janata Dal (S) to carry all castes and communities with it. The party is not an alternative to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in the State, he said.

Mr. Siddaramaiah and other leaders had built up the party with the support of lakhs of supporters, and Mr. Deve Gowda is not alone in that. His actions and decisions will encourage indiscipline in the party and demoralise the workers, he said.

The former minister also said it was Mr. Deve Gowda who expelled the founder of the Janata Dal Ramakrishna Hegde, from the party immediately after becoming the Prime Minister. A new political party is the need of the hour to oppose the "fascist forces" in the State, he said.

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil inaugurated the conference hall.

Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy, and Chandrashekar Kambar and Umashri, MLCs, were present.
