``Kohli delaying extradition''
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI:
The Union Government has opposed an application by Maninder Singh Kohli, facing extradition proceedings to stand trial in the Hannah Foster murder case in Britain, seeking summoning of 10 defence witnesses for examination. Government counsel A.K. Vali said the application was an attempt to obstruct and delay the proceedings. The court's job was limited to considering, on the basis of material provided by the British police, whether a prima facie case for extradition existed or not. Witnesses were examined during the trial of the case.C.S. Baskshi, counsel for Kohli, said the Government's stand was contrary to its request to the court to summon prosecution witnesses for examining them in the proceedings.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravinder Dudeja said he would hear pleas by both parties on August 16.
Kohli was brought here on September 10 last on a warrant issued by the magistrate. He was arrested on July 15 at Kalimpong in West Bengal and later lodged in the Chandigarh jail in connection with another case there.
