Mahendran, Maheswari claim titles

Coimbatore: A. Mahendran and R. Rajapandian, both from Loyola College, took the top two spots in the men's section of the Freedom Marathon run at the Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science here on Thursday.

K. Maheswari of Nirmala College emerged the winner in the women's category.

The results:

Men: 1. A. Mahendran (Loyola), 2. P. Rajapandian (Loyola), 3. P. Ranjith; Women: 1. K. Maheswari (Nirmala), 2. A. Kalaiselvi (Avinashilingam), 3. S. Kavitha (Navarasam Arts & Science).

Maheswaran wins

P. Maheswaran of Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi and C. Delphin of Lady Doak College, Madurai tied for the honours with 7 points each in the Madurai Kamaraj University chess tournament in Madurai on Wednesday.

But Maheswaran emerged champion on a better progressive score to lift the Sourashtra Ccollege Silver Jubilee Trophy. M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan of Kodaikanal Christian College finished third with 6.5 points.

Amit in joint lead

Amit K.R. Medda of Jharkhand joined leader R. Balasubramaniam of ICF (both 7.5 points) at the end of the ninth round in the V.P.M. Trust FIDE-rated prize-money open chess tournament in Palani on Thursday.

TCE triumphs

Thiagarajar College of Engineering won the title in the Anna University Zone IX inter-collegiate women's badminton tournament defeating host K.L.N. College of Engineering 2-0 in the final at Pottapalayam near Madurai recently.

The results: Final: TCE bt KLN CE 2-0 (R. Krishnaveni bt R. Krishnaveni 11-0, 11-1; R. Krishnaveni & Gayathiri Srinivasan bt Ancy & R. Krishnaveni 15-6, 15-8). Third place: PSNA CE, Dindigul bt Mohd. Sathak EC, Kilakarai 2-0 (S. Salini bt Eswari 11-1, 11-0, S. Salini & S. Ramya bt M. Silpa & J. Sandhya 15-5, 4-15, 15-8).

Rafiq scalps six

A hat-trick by A. Md. Rafiq (six for 21) was the highlight of Dharmapuri three-wicket win over Thiruvannamalai in the TNCA Hercules MTB Turbo Drive inter-district under-19 tournament in Krishnagiri.

With two wins each, Dharmapuri and Tiruchi have entered the quarterfinals.

The scores:

Tiruchi 211 for nine in 50 overs (S. Muraleeshwaran 57) bt Dharmapuri 112 in 42.4 overs

Thiruvannamalai 163 in 47.1 overs (B. Sultan Allaudeen four for 28) tied with Sivagangai 163 in 49.4 overs.

Thiruvannamalai 162 in 39.5 overs (S. Senthil Kumar 56, A. Md. Rafiq six for 21 including hat-trick) lost to Dharmapuri 164 for seven in 48.5 overs (J. Yuvaraj 67)

Sivagangai 71 in 25 overs (G. Karthik five for 21) bt Tiruchi 68 in 29.4 overs.

2-0 win for Thirunagar

Thirunagar Hockey Club (Madurai) beat Tirunelveli Hockey Academy 2-0 in the State-level hockey tournament, conducted by Netaji Hockey Club, in Kovilpatti on Thursday. Balakrishnan and Ponraj scored for Thirunagar HC. — Sports Correspondent
