Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri in last eight

NEW DELHI: The Bhambri sisters, Ankita and Sanaa, moved into the singles quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament in London on Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Ankita beat Elizabeth Thomas of Britain 7-6, 6-2 after having got past Irena Pavlovic of France 6-2, 6-4 the previous day.

The seventh-seeded Sanaa was leading 6-2, 2-1 when her second round opponent Biance Acquistapace of Australia conceded.

Sanaa had won her first round match 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 against Melissa Berry of Britain.

In the $10,000 Futures tournament in Semarang, Indonesia, Gurmehar Singh and Vijay Sundar Prashant lost in the first round of singles.

Gurmehar went down 3-6, 4-6 to qualifier Huai-En Chang of Chinese Taipei while Prashant was outplayed 6-0, 6-3 by the second-seeded Atsuo Ogawa of Japan.

In the second leg of the Chinese Satellite, the eighth-seeded Jaco Mathew went down 5-7, 1-6 to Benoit Bottero of France in the pre-quarterfinals.

In doubles, Mathew and Ashutosh Singh retired at 6-7(7) against Lior Barbash and Ishay Hadash of Israel in the quarterfinals.

However, Kamala Kannan and Patrick Briaud of the U.S. made the semifinals as their opponents, the fourth-seeded Xin-Yuan Yu and Yu Zhang of China, retired at 2-3.
