Work ends on all Alamatti power generation units

Overall power generation capacity of State to go up by 290 MW

BANGALORE: Construction and installation works of all six power generation units at the Alamatti Dam were completed on Wednesday and they will be formally commissioned shortly, Minister for Public Works and Energy H. D. Revanna has said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, he said that with the completion of the Rs. 690-crore power project, the overall power generation capacity of the State will go up by 290 MW. The first unit generates 15 MW of power, and the rest 55 MW each, he added.

Hydel power

Referring to the power generation position in the State, Mr. Revanna said the Government is likely to reduce the quantum of power being purchased from other States. It is also contemplating to sell 10 per cent of the additional hydel power generated in the State to private companies.

Compared to the power generated last year, Sharavathi and Supa generation stations recorded an additional generation of 1,500 MW this year.

The State is hopeful of generating more electricity as the Linganamakki Dam is 85 per cent full and the Supa Dam is 62 per cent full. If the present rainfall pattern continues in the catchment areas, both dams will reach their full level by the last week of August.

Owing to strict adherence of norms on purchasing power and the efficiency of officials in opting for cost-effective measures, the Government has saved around Rs. 400 crores on power purchases, he said.

New projects

As decided by the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. at its board meeting, work on the 500-MW second unit of the Bellary power project and the 210-MW eighth unit of the Raichur Thermal Power Station will begin in September. The two projects are estimated to cost around Rs. 2,630 crores and are likely to be completed in 34 months and 27 months respectively.

Work on the fist unit of the Bellary power project, which can generate 500 MW of electricity, will be completed in September 2006.
