CHENNAI: National Cadet Corps Director-General M.C. Bhandari on Wednesday requested the State Government to expedite the process of earmarking land for NCC Nagar so that advanced training could be imparted to cadets in a holistic manner. Lt.Gen. Bhandari told reporters here that many States had already allotted land for setting up NCC Nagars. "Cadets do not need to run around from one place to another if there is an integrated set-up to train," he said. The NCC directorate here could concentrate better on training cadets for the Services Selection Board interviews if such a facility existed. In his view, many SSB candidates from the State did not perform well because there were no dedicated personality development programmes. Also, there were no institutes to train students in psychology tests in the manner required. He said that if a capsule course of 10-12 days were run at an integrated facility, then students from Tamil Nadu would perform much better. When it was pointed out that the NCC directorate here had been asking for land for a very long time, Lt.Gen. Bhandari said that land had to be technically suitable for setting up such a facility. While he was aware of the difficulties in finding such a large piece of land near a metropolis such as Chennai, he hoped the Government would consider the request favourably. Lt.Gen. Bhandari thanked the Government for its cooperation and for making adequate allocations in its budget. The NCC chief said that he wanted to request the Chief Minister for a suitable piece of land, but has not been able to meet her during his visits. As many as 1.04 lakh students in the State have enrolled in NCC. Chennai alone has 59 units divided into six groups. As many as 757 schools and 300 colleges in the State had NCC units. om a United Nations body.
