KOLLAM: Government employees and teachers today held demonstrations in front of the District Collectorate here to register their protest against the allegedly paltry interim relief announced for them. The demonstration of pro-Left service organisations under the banner of the Action Council of State Employees and Teachers was led by M.E. Alfred, L. Vijayan Nair, S. Ashok Kumar and K. Suresh Babu. Council leaders Basil Joseph, V.P. Jayaprakash Menon, B. Sudhakaran, T.N. Vijaya Krishnan, Baby Isaac and K. Sunil Babu addressed the demonstrators. Demonstrations under the banner of the Council were also held in front of the Kollam Taluk office, the Irrigation Department complex, the Resurvey Office, and the Education Deputy Director's Office. The employees of the Kollam Corporation also boycotted work and held a demonstration in front of the Corporation headquarters. The separate demonstration organised by the Kerala NGO Association in front of the collectorate was inaugurated by the district president of the National Congress (Indira) K. Karunakaran Pillai. In his address he said that by denying interim relief with retrospective effect, the UDF Government had betrayed the employees. He wanted the Government to announce an interim relief of 25 per cent on salary with retrospective effect from March 2002. Announcing an interim relief with effect from August 2005 was tantamount to denying the employees their justified rights, he said.
