Revenue officials suspended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four revenue officials of Idukki district have been placed under suspension by Land Revenue Commisioner K.J.Alphons in connection with the large-scale encroachment of revenue and forest land and the issue of forged `pattayams' in the districts. They are V.B. Sahadevan, Junior Superintendent, Taluk Office Devikulam; C.V.Vijayan, village officer, Vellathooval Vilage, Justin Paul, village officer, Vattavada Village; and K.O. Ulahannan, deputy tahsildar, Taluk Office Devikulam. The action has been taken on the basis of the report of the ADGP (Intelligence) Rajan K.Madhekar. - Special Correspondent

Lawyers protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Association of Lawyers has protested against the move to make November 5 a sitting day for the High Court to make up for the holiday given in connection with the former Chief Minister P.K.Vasudevan Nair's demise on July 14. K.P. Jayachandran, general secretary of the organisation, in a statement here described it as an insult to the memory of the leader. — Special Correspondent

MLA pension Bill for subject panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Payment of Pension to Members of Legislature (Amendment) Bill has been referred to the Subject Committee.

Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan said in the House on Thursday that the bill was being introduced as per the agreement arrived at the House Business Advisory Committee. The bill seeks to enhance the income limit for MLAs from Rs.12,500 to Rs.17,500 a month, besides seeking to extend full family pension benefits to the minor sons and unmarried daughters within the ambit of the family pension for MLAs.

Stir plan dropped

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State-wide strike proposed to be held by the Bank of India Staff Union on August 13 has been called off on the basis of talks held in zonal office of the bank on Thursday. On the basis of the undertaking reached at the talks, the bank agreed to take steps to open a branch in Cherthala and discuss the future activities of the branches at the zonal business promotion committee. — Special Correspondent

School centenary fete

KOLLAM: The Parent-Teacher Association of Punalur Government Higher Secondary School in association with the Punalur Merchants Chamber will organise a Pratibha Sangamam at the school auditorium on Friday as part of the school's centenary celebrations. Human resource centre

KOLLAM: Minister for Education E.T. Mohammed Basheer will lay the foundation stone for the Ustad Human Resource Centre (UHRC) at a function to be held at Chandanathope, near here, on Friday. The UHRC will comprise an English centre, Information technology unit, audio-video library, guidance and information centre, examination training centre, Edusat centre and a ladies hostel. - Staff Reporter

Man killed in accident

PATHANAMTHITTA: A retired police constable, C.G.Karunakaran (59) of Paliyekkara Charivupuryidathil, near Thiruvalla, was fatally knocked down by a van in Thiruvalla town on Wednesday night. He is survived by wife and two children. The Thiruvalla police registered a case in connection with the incident. - Staff Reporter
