Rs.905-crore project to streamline power distribution

  • 11 places declared tourist destination centres
  • Legislation proposed to check exploitation of tourists
  • Centre yet to give nod for `Monsoon and `Ayurveda' package

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Trouble Call Management System now in vogue in the Kerala State Electricity Board will be extended to more areas, according to Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed.

In addition to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam and Kozhikode where the facility already exists, such centres are to be set up in 41 places all over the State, he said in reply to a question raised in the Assembly by Thampanoor Ravi on Thursday.

With a view to making the power distribution system more effective, a Rs.905-crore Centrally assisted project has been taken up by the Board, the Minister said.

Tourism Minister K.C. Venugopal told the House that the United Democratic Front Government has declared 11 places in the State as Tourist Destination Centres. The centres are Poovar, Marad, Kuttanad, Cherayi, Chalakkudy, Peruvannamoozhi, Kakkayam, Thusharagiri, Meenkunnu, Kodikuthimala and Iringal. Legislation has been proposed to check exploitation of tourists and prevent undesirable activities in Ayurveda massage parlours under the cover of tourism promotion.

The Centre is yet to give the nod for the `Monsoon and Ayurveda' package proposed by the State.

However, the Tourism Department has been providing a fillip to the promotion of Ayurveda at tourism fairs.

    Sabarimala development

The Travancore Devaswom Board has paid a sum of Rs.6.41 crores for the 305 acres of land made available to it for providing better facilities for pilgrims, Mr. Venugopal said in reply to another question.
