Final loss disappointing: Venugopala Rao

VISAKHAPATNAM: Losing the final was the only disappointment of the tour said Y. Venugopala Rao about the IndianOil tri-series in Sri Lanka after returning home on Thursday.

Venu, who could bat only in one match (against Sri Lanka), was impressed with the way he played the spin wizard, Muttiah Muralitharan.

"Initially I was a little bit nervous but gained confidence after playing a few shots. I should not have got out when the going was good", said Venu about his innings.

In the next match, against West Indies, he did not get a chance to bat and would have loved to play the final against Sri Lanka. However, the 23-year-old was not disappointed and said he would like to wait for more chances to come his way.

Harminder triumphs

Harminder Singh of Southern Command won the 50km. walk in the army inter-command athletic championship here on Thursday.

The results: 50km walk: 1. Harminder Singh (SC) 4hr27m29s; 2. Babu Bhai (WC); Ashish Kushwahi (CC). Hammer throw: 1. Satish Kumar (WC) 60.85m; 2. Chandrabir (NC); 3. Mukesh Kumar (CC). 200m: 1. Rajesh Kumar (WC) 21.42s; 2. Bipin Bashi (SC); 3. Vikas Tiwari (WC). 110 hurdles: 1. Jitender Singh (CC) 14.76s; 2. Gulzar Singh (CC); 3. Gopinath (SC).

Big win for Vathsalya Institute

Vathsalya Institute of Science defeated Aurora EC by nine wickets in the 2nd Bandari Srinivas trophy inter-engineering college cricket tournament here on Thursday.

The scores: Aurora EC 110 for eight lost to Vathsalya Inst. of Science 114 for one (Arsha 44 not out).

TKR CET 125 for eight bt MGIT 96 for nine.

St. Stanley EC 125 for four (Manoj 43) bt Farah Inst. of Tech. 100 for four. Guru Nanak EC 90 for nine lost to Tirumala EC 93 for one.

Thumping win for Gitanjali Gitanjali posted a resounding 32-14 win over St. John's in the boys' competition of the Dr. Emily Emanuel inter-school basketball tournament at St. Andrews, Bowenpally, on Thursday.

For the loser, N. Raj Kumar, with a dozen points, broke free as teammates Ignatius and Gopal came in for tight marking by the Gitanjali defenders.

The results: Boys: `A': Gitanjali 32 (Mohit 19) bt St. John's 14 (N. Raj Kumar 12); `D': Chirec 26 bt Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan 19.

Girls: `A': Gitanjali 21 (Savithi 17) bt N.S.K.K. 2; `B': Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan 10 bt Rosary Convent 4; `C': Holy Family 15 bt St. John's 2; `D': HPS Begumpet 12 (Yamini 10) bt Chirec 10.

Deepak on song

M.S. Deepak Kumar slammed a double hundred (206, 184b, 1x6, 27x4) and picked up four wickets to place Srikakulam in a strong position against Vizianagaram in the ACA North Zone under-22 inter-district tournament at Srikakulam on Thursday. Vizianagaram's Santosh claimed five wickets.

In the other match, Visakhapatnam scored 355 for five against East Godavari.

The scores:

Srikakulam 317 in 66.2 overs (M.S. Deepak Kumar 206, Santosh five for 74) vs Vizianagaram 66 for six in 21.4 overs (M.S. Deepak Kumar four for 14).

Visakhapatnam 355 for five in 90 overs (Sriharsha 91, B. Penta Rao 84, J.T. Yadav 64, Srinivas 44) vs East Godavari.

Sanketh shines

Sanketh Shah (125) helped Gemini Friends CC drew its match against Central Excise in the `A' division two-day matches league championship on Thursday.

The scores: A Division: India Cements 213 and 176 for nine (Aditya Agarwal 52, Ashrith Reddy five for 63) lost to Ensconse 221 and 169 for five (Ibrahim Khaleel 69 not out).

A Divison two-day league: Central Excise 273 (Md. Faraaz Ahmed 85, Sanjay 63) drew with Gemini Friends 243 (Sanketh Shah 125, Ibrahim four for 88).

Deccan Chronicle 130 (Ashish four for 41) and 187 for nine decl. (Gautam Raju 46, Shivarama Krishna 42, Prithvi four for 43) drew with Galaxy 177 (Prithvi 48, Lalith Mohan seven for 45) and 51 for three.
