Archana Dutta assumes charge

BANGALORE: Archana Dutta has assumed charge as Additional Principal Information Officer, Press Information Bureau, Bangalore, on her promotion to the senior administrative grade of the Indian Information Service.

Ms. Dutta has worked in various media units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. On her repatriation from deputation as officer on special duty to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi, she was working as Joint Director, All India Radio, Bangalore. — Special Correspondent

Fears over safety of Koyna Dam

Belgaum: Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash on Thursday expressed fears over the safety of the Koyna Dam in Satara district of Maharashtra and the consequent threat to the safety of downstream villages in the light of rumours of a crack in the dam.

Talking to presspersons here on Thursday, he said there are rumours of a crack in the dam, which is a matter of serious concern. "We also have credible information about a threat from the dam," he said. He did not elaborate.

When contacted, officials in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra agreed that there have been rumours about a crack in the dam. But a technical team inspected the dam on Wednesday and did not find any crack. — Staff Correspondent

Trade bodies want KERC hearings put off

Bangalore: The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has requested the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission to postpone hearings on the tariff revision petitions by the electricity supply companies by at least a month. The FKCCI and its affiliates are actively helping with flood relief work and they will not be able to participate in the hearings now, FKCCI president S. Babu said.

Mr. Babu also said that with the hydel reservoirs almost full and with cheaper power available, a pragmatic assessment of costs and tariffs may not be possible.

The Karnataka Small-scale Industries Association also said it will be difficult for its member industries to attend the hearings, which need to be postponed. — Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: C.V. Mahadevaiah has been elected president of the Karnataka Pradesh Hotels and Restaurants Association. The other office-bearers are B. Ramachandra Upadhya (secretary), Madhukar M. Shetty (treasurer), H.V. Shantaram, Inna Srinivas Rao, V.S. Hegde and Udaya Banu Halawai (vice-presidents), B.S. Nagaraja Dhanya (joint secretary), and U. Suresh Holla, K. Appointed survey coordinator for Kodagu

Madikeri: S.I. Muneer Ahmad, former chairman of the Madikeri Urban Development Authority, has been invited to act as the Kodagu district coordinator for the proposed survey of manuscripts under the National Mission for Manuscripts. He has received a communication to this effect from the State coordinator of the Manuscript Survey Project, S. Subbaraman, Mr. Ahmad said in a press release here.

Mr. Ahmad will pick and train 50 surveyors for the job of collecting manuscripts available in the district and collating information on them to preserve them for posterity. — Staff Correspondent

Training for unemployed youth

Bidar: The Government will train unemployed youth from minority communities in self-employment skills. Youth aged between 18 years and 40 years can apply. They should have passed or failed SSLC. Minority youth studying ITI or diploma courses will be paid a stipend of Rs. 150 a month. Details can be had from the District Minorities and Backward Classes Development Officer, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

Ganja seized, man arrested

Bidar: The Aurad police intercepted a jeep and seized ganja worth Rs 1.1 lakh on Wednesday. Bheem Bai Dattu Lagade of Chowkpol near Pune was arrested. A case has been registered at Santpur Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

Girl dies of gastroenteritis

Bidar: A 13-year-old girl died of gastroenteritis at Yalavantagi of Basava Kalyan taluk on Tuesday. Rekha Aneppa died on the way to the hospital. Sources said she was suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea for the last three days. The Taluk Health Officer, Suryavanshi, visited the spot. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Home Guards will be given value-added training in the use of arms and laws concerning the common man, Additional Superintendent of Police M.M. Daula said on Wednesday. He was inaugurating a basic training for Home Guards at Khanapur in Bhalki taluk. The president of Mailar Mallanna Temple Trust Basavaraj Hede was present, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

Body found

Bidar: An unidentified body was found on the railway line near Halbarga of Bhalki taluk on Wednesday. Police have sought the help of public in identifying the body of 65-year-old male wearing a white dhoti, jubba, and a red turban. A case has been registered. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Vijay Kumar Anande Gadagi has been elected president of Bidar Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee, and Govardhan Rathod is the vice-president. Kanteppa Dana Hudgi is president and Basavaraj Noola vice-president of Humnabad APMC. Abhangarao Gadade and Gurunath Butte have been elected president and vice-president of Aurad APMC. Mangalabai Subhash Karamunge and Tanaji Tukaram are president and vice-president of Bhalki APMC. Sidrama Gudage and Baburao Patne Hulsoor have been elected president and vice-president of Basvava Kalyan APMC, according to separate releases. — Staff Correspondent

Poets' meet

MADIKERI: Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, in association with the District Journalists' Association, will hold a multi-lingual poets' meet at the Press Club here on September 13 to commemorate "Keil Poldu," one of the three important festivals of Kodavas.

The poems should not have been published earlier.
