MADIKERI: The 15th general council meeting of the Insurance Corporation Employees Union (ICEU), Mysore Division, to be held here on Sunday and Monday, will oppose the Centre's move to "destroy" public sector insurance companies, reception committee Chairman T.P. Ramesh said here on Wednesday. Speaking to presspersons, he said over 500 delegates from Kodagu, Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Mysore districts will take part in the meeting. Specific problems with regard to the district will be discussed at the meeting, he said. A procession will be taken out on Sunday morning from Gandhi maidan to Cauvery Hall, the venue of the meeting. All India Insurance Employees Association General Secretary K.Venugopal will inaugurate the meeting. K.G. Bopaiah, Madikeri MLA, and the former Minister M.C. Nanaiah will be the guests, Mr. Ramesh said. ICEU General Secretary, Mysore division, S.S. Nagesh, accused the private insurance players in the country of exploiting people. In spite of the private insurance companies being in the country for four years, they have failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people, he said. The market share of the LIC in 2004-05 was 91.5 per cent and that of the rest of the 13 private players put together was just 8.5 per cent, he added. Various labour organisations of banks, insurance sector, BSNL, and Union and State Government employees' unions have given a call for an countrywide general strike on September 29 to pressure the UPA Government to stick to its commitments made in the Common Minimum Programme, particularly those concerning the public sector insurance companies, Mr. Nagesh said. ICEU Vice-President, Mysore Division, C.K. Gopal; ICEU Secretary, Madikeri, Neeraja Holla; and Suvarna, a functionary, were present.
