Engineering seats in SVU, AU filled

HYDERABAD: Engineering seats earmarked for the OC category male students in the Sri Venkateshwara University (SVU) local area and Andhra University (AU) local area are completely filled.

A statement from the EACMET Convenor-2005 said that only pharmacy seats are available for SVU local area candidates. However, seats are available for "OC" female candidates of SVU local area and AU local area. AIR digital broadcasting

WARANGAL: The All India Radio, Warangal station, has commenced digital broadcasting and is the first radio station in the State to procure digital equipment for receiving signals, recording and broadcasting.

According to the Station Director, P. Raja Rao, the AIR, Warangal, began its digital broadcasting on Wednesday. The Outdoor Broadcasting unit will record the programmes in digital form, he said.

Insurance cover for home guards

Kakinada: Home guards are being provided insurance cover of Rs.1 lakh at a nominal premium of Rs.54 and more welfare measures have been also initiated for them making it a more attractive job, said C.S. Naidu, I.G. of Police (Home Guards).

At a press conference here on Thursday, he saidanother 3,000 home guards were recruited recently from interior tribal areas and a month-long training would commence shortly. Correspondent

Physicians' meet from today

TIRUPATI: The Andhra Pradesh chapter of the Association of Physicians of India will be holding its mid-term conference (APICON) in Tirupati for three days from August 12.

The conference will be inaugurated by the Health Minister, K. Rosaiah in Hotel Bliss here on Friday. As many as 450 members are expected to take part in the meet, in which 40 eminent speakers from Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Pondicherry and Vellore will be delivering lectures at technical sessions. __Staff Reporter

Facility for Tirumala pilgrims

TIRUPATI: Now, pilgrims arriving here from far-off places can leave for Tirumala hills even in the dark hours. The counter, which issues `Sudarsanam', the bar-coded wristband to pilgrims at the Tirumala link stand at the APSRTC complex, has been directed to issue tokens round the clock. The facility is expected to benefit passengers arriving into Tirupati during late hours, as they can now tie the wristband and directly board a bus to Tirumala. __Staff Reporter

Sanitary worker ends life

Kakinada: A sanitary worker Gonivilli Sreenu, 30, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his home in Madireddivari street of Suryaraopet locality on Wednesday night. He was rushed to the Government General Hospital where he died in the wee hours of Thursday. The Two town police have registered the case.__Correspondent

Fair deal for BC urged

Hyderabad: A delegation of leaders of Backward Classes organisations led by State BC Front chairman G. Mallesh Yadav and State BC Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah met the Minister for BC Welfare, D. Srinivas, on Thursday and submitted a memorandum seeking withdrawal of GO.No.23.

In a statement later, they accused the Congress Government of working against the interests of the BCs and they urged the Minister to prevent any injustice to the BCs.

The statement claimed that the Minister had assured them of conducting a high-level meeting with all BC organisations to discuss the issue.

TDP activist arrested

ANANTAPUR: A TDP activist of Vysapuram village in Yellanur mandal of the district, Ravindranath Naidu, was arrested by the police on Thursday on the charges of illegal possession of a firearm and country bombs. According to the police, a revolver, two bullets and eight countrymade bombs were seized from his possession. He is a follower of the former legislator, K. Suryapratap Reddy. His brother, Kedar Naidu, was allegedly murdered in Anantapur last year.- Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: The Union Minister for Non-conventional energy sources Vilas Muttemwar, has nominated Mukku Satyavanthudu, former president of the Tirupati Bar Association, to the District advisory committee (DAC) on Renewable energy. He will hold the post for a term of three years.- Staff Reporter

Revenue Inspector

ANANTAPUR: A Revenue Inspector of the Mandal Revenue Office at Parigi in the district, Jambunath, was arrested by the sleuths of Anti Corruption Bureau at his residence in Hindupur on Thursday after he was caught red-handed while reportedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 500 from a farmer for issuance of pattadar passbook. The ACB officials approached the RI in the guise of farmers and trapped him.

Venue shifted

MADANAPALLE: New ration cards for residents of 6- 13 wards will be issued at the DPL centre in the Red Cross building instead of Town Hall, the Madanapalle MRO Subramanyam Naidu, informed in a press release.- Correspondent
