BJP bats for industries in residential areas

Staff Reporter

Demands lower power rates for such units The livelihood of about 30 lakh people is connected with the industries in non-conforming areas

NEW DELHI: The BJP Delhi Pradesh Industry Cell held a protest demonstration near Delhi Secretariat on Thursday and demanded that the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, and the Industry Minister, Mangat Ram Singhal, take immediate steps to declare as industrial areas all those residential areas where industrial activity was going on in over 70 per cent of the dwelling units.

The protesters, who also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister to press their demands, also threatened to "gherao'' the two Congress leaders and force them to resign if no action was taken in the matter.

The Delhi unit BJP president Harsh Vardhan, who led the protest, said the livelihood of about 30 lakh people is connected with the industries in non-conforming areas. Stating that such industrial activity had been going on for long, he said the Government had not taken any concrete steps to develop these areas despite the industrial areas yielding crores of rupees as revenue for the State Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Noting that it was by virtue of these industrial areas that Delhi was considered an industrial hub, the BJP leader lamented that the Government, instead of providing facilities to them was more interested in uprooting them.

Dr. Vardhan demanded that these industries be provided power at low cost so that they could pass on the benefit to consumers. He said the Sheila Dikshit Government's decision to increase the power tariff has put a heavy burden on the general public as well as industries and farmers. With the production dwindling and the cost of production increasing the industrialists, he said, were feeling insecure.
