BELLARY: As a prelude to the State-level convention and general strike call given by the Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) on August 29 in Bangalore, the district unit of JCTU will hold a district-level meet at Gandhi Bhavan here on Sunday at 10.30 a.m. The purpose of the general strike and the district-level meet is to oppose the "anti-labour and anti-people policies" of the United Progressive Alliance and urge it to concede to their demands. The Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), United Trade Union Congress (Lenin Sarani), LIC Employees' Association, Bank Employees' Associations, Central and State Governments Employees' Associations are among the organisations that have come together to form the JCTU here. Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, K. Somashekar of the UTUC-LS said the UPA has adopted several anti-people and anti-labour policies apart from privatising profit-making public sector undertakings. He said the Government's decisions have resulted in the rise in prices and unemployment. He accused the UPA Government of pursuing the anti-labour policies of the National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party. A.R.M. Ismail of the AITUC, said the concept of a welfare State is being diluted and stress is being laid on privatisation and disinvestment. The 16-point charter of demands, include: to bring out a legislation ensuring the security of agricultural labourers and those in the unorganised sector, to provide employment opportunities in rural and urban areas by amending the National Rural Employment Act, to ban contract labour and revoke the decision on disinvestments of profit-making units, to rejuvenate sick public sector undertakings, to disallow foreign investment in communication and defence, to constitute the Sixth Pay Commission for government employees. Venkataramana of CITU, H. Nagabhushana Rao and Ganapati Hegde of Bank Employees' Associations, Adimurthy of KSRTC Staff and Workers' Union and Gurusiddamurthy of State and Central Government Employees' Association were present.
