CHENNAI: A three-day international `Vision Science and Optometry' conference will begin in the city on Friday. The programme is organised by the Elite School of Optometry, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations. Talking to journalists about the conference, R. Krishnakumar, principal of the school said teleoptometry, aspects of yoga and eye research in optometry were some of the subjects that would be taken up for discussions at the programme. More than 550 delegates from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the U.S., Sri Lanka and the U.K. are expected to take part in the event, besides the experts from within the country. Mr. Krishnakumar also noted that the conference would give an opportunity to the students and practising optometrists in the country to meet, interact and listen to the presentations of frontrunners in the field of optometry from around the world. The Elite School of Optometry was founded in 1985 and it conducts a four-year graduate course in optometry, which is an integrated degree programme that combined lectures in the classes with practical training at Sankara Nethralaya. The final-year students undergo internship by getting posted in various departments of Sankara Nethralaya for hands on training. The organisation offers BS, MPhil and PhD degrees in optometry as off-campus collaborative programmes of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Mr. Krishnakumar added.
