CHENNAI:
The Madras High Court has stayed the operation of a TASMAC wine shop on North Mada Street in Tiruvanmiyur.
Justice K. Raviraja Pandian passed the order on a petition from T.V. Ganesh, who submitted that the shop was situated in a locality with at least three schools. Temple cars were taken through the street on auspicious occasions. At least 25 such car festivals take place every year, he said. The wine shop was situated within 25 to 30 metres of the Sundara Ganapathy Temple.
As per Rule 8(1) of the Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Vending (in Shops and Bars) Rules 2003, no liquor shop shall be established in municipal corporation and municipalities within a distance of 50 metres and in other areas 100 metres of places of worship and educational institutions, the petitioner said.
He said the shop was an inconvenience to the public, especially students and devotees. Residents had made a representation to the Chennai District Collector but there had been no response. He prayed for the quashing of the order sanctioning the establishment of a wine shop on the North Mada Street and sought a stay on its operation as an interim relief.
