TAMBARAM: Channelising public contributions for tsunami relief operations through non-government organisations for better and efficient use materialised at Okkiyam Thuraipakkam with the Chenna NGO Coordination Council coming forward to fund the construction of 1,300 temporary semi-solid structures for the affected persons accommodated at temporary shelters at Kannagi Nagar in Thuraipakkam on the outskirts of Chennai. Laying the foundation for the project on Thursday, Law Minister D. Jayakumar said the Government had allocated Rs.19.5 crore for building permanent shelters for tsunami affected people, who had been shifted to Kannagi Nagar from the coastal areas in Southern Chennai after the December 26 disaster. Basic infrastructure would be created in the area where the semi-solid structures, each to be built at a cost of Rs.20,000, were to come up. Special Officer (Relief and Rehabilitation) C.V. Shankar said more than Rs. 1000 crore had been spent by the Government on tsunami relief operations. Permanent dwelling units for the Kannagi Nagar people would be built at the same area by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. Collector R. Venkatesan said it had been proposed to build 3,200 permanent dwelling units in Kancheepuram district for the benefit of tsunami affected people both in Kancheepuram and nearby Chennai. The district administration has identified 20 acres of vacant land behind a college in Okkiyam Thuraipakkam for building temporary semi-solid structures for the affected people relocated from southern Chennai. Chennai District Collector S. Chandramohan called upon the beneficiaries to make best use of the facilities provided to them.
