CHENNAI: Several welfare projects were taken up in various parts of the city to commemorate the 35th Charternite celebration of Lions Club of central Madras. Around 570 people were screened at 13 eye camps held in the city till Saturday and 200 cataract surgeries were performed. In eye-screening camps for refraction errors, around 240 people were screened, of which 146 were given glasses. Around 100 students were also given spectacles.
Diabetes camp
Besides diabetes awareness camps, around 420 people were screened for diabetic retinopathy in three different camps. Nineteen persons were referred to Sankara Nethralaya. Last Friday, about 120 units of blood were collected from a camp held at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Taramani. A medical camp was organised for senior citizens at Annai Illam, Mylapore. The club also extended its services to physically challenged children at Iswara Prasad Dattatreya Orthpaedic Centre. The other major projects of the club were the inauguration of the Lion KRS Insulin Bank of Juvenile Diabetics at 56, Thiruvengadapuram, Choolaimedu, where 10 children would be given insulin free of cost. Tele-ophthalmology facility would be provided at Dr. Kumaraswami Health Centre, Perumalpuram, Kanyakumari district and at another hospital in Erode along with Sankara Nethralaya.
