CHENNAI: If you are given a map, could you find your way to the Madurai Meenakshi Temple? Many students who took the `map quiz' on Wednesday were trying to find the nearest railway station to the temple. How to read the contours of a map correctly was part of the one-hour written test to select participants for the national-level `Map Quiz' to be held in Chennai soon. "This is the first time we are conducting such an event. Nearly 1,500 students from classes VIII to X participated in the preliminary round," said deputy director of Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA), M. Stalin. Along with the Survey of India, INCA covered six places, including Coimbatore, Trichy, Dindigul, Cuddalore, Chennai and Pondicherry, to create awareness about geography and other related subjects. At SBOA School in Anna Nagar, 63 teams poured over maps, interpreted the contours, cracked the crossword and came up with responses to queries regarding cartography, remote sensing and GPS technologies.
