  • Corporation claims to have repaired 3,420 manholes
  • Work is in progress on another 720
  • City police lists out over 300 manholes without cover
  • Water Board to put a mesh on manholes, MCH yet to make course of action clear

HYDERABAD: The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad has set a fresh deadline for attending to emergency works like covering catch-pits (manholes), filling up potholes and water stagnation points within the next two days.

MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju reviewed a meeting with his engineers on Thursday and issued the fresh set of deadlines to his staff. The Corporation has claimed to having repaired 3,420 catch-pits while work was in progress on another 720.

While there are over a lakh manholes owned by both MCH and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), uncovered manholes have become veritable death traps with the latest victim being a teenager at Kavadiguda.

Even as both these civic departments debate over ways to tackle open manholes and nalas, the city police has come out with a list of over 300 manholes that do not have a cover.

The survey was taken up by all the police stations in the twin cities following the death of the female bank officer at Amberpet last month.

The city police recorded 210 uncovered manholes as belonging to MCH, 90 of HMWSSB and six of Secunderabad Cantonment Board. Such dangerous manholes have been found be located at various places including Kundanbagh, Jubilee Hills, Srinagar Colony, Balamrai and so on.

The report has been sent to higher officials of both MCH and HMWSSB.

While the Water Board has decided to put a mesh on its manholes to prevent people from being washed away after sitting on the proposal for a month or so, Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad is yet to make its action clear though the Commissioner has once again warned of suspensions wherever officials were found negligent.
