BANGALORE: Tears rolled down the cheeks of Minoti Chowdary and Rasheela Bai as Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Thursday handed over to them diamond and gold ornaments that were stolen from their houses and were later recovered by the city police.

Minoti Chowdary of Nandini Layout and Rasheela Bai of Ulsoor were among many victims of crime who got their stolen articles back at a property return parade organised by the city police at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium.

Mr. Dharam Singh inaugurated the event by handing over the recovered goods to the owners in five cases. Properties worth Rs. 3.30 crores recovered in 288 cases were returned to the owners.

While handing over Rs. 15 lakhs in cash to Kanthilal, a bullion trader from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Mr. Dharam Singh told him to inform the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh about the efficiency of the Bangalore police. The S.J. Park police recently arrested two persons who had allegedly kidnapped Kanthilal's employee and robbed him of the cash.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dharam Singh said policing in the city had improved after Ajai Kumar Singh took over as Commissioner. "The fear that had gripped the public mind is now diminishing," he remarked.

The police have instilled confidence in the people by organising a programme to return the recovered properties worth crores of rupees to the owners. "I am proud of the police officers," he said.

The Chief Minister said Bangalore's rapid growth and influx of people to the city have created new challenges for the police here. He called upon the city police to be prepared to tackle crimes in the changed scenario.

Mr. Dharam Singh gave away trophies to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Ramesh, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Syed Ulfath Hussein, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), M.D. Basannavar, for the work done by their teams.

While the East division police got the trophy for recovering and returning goods in the highest number of cases (73), the North division police got the trophy for returning the highest value of goods (Rs. 68.61 lakhs).

In all, Rs. 32.28 lakhs in cash, gold, diamond and silver ornaments worth Rs. 73.13 lakhs, mobile phones worth Rs. 5 lakhs, two-wheelers worth Rs. 23.53 lakhs, four-wheelers worth Rs. 67.96 lakhs and electronic and other goods worth Rs. 1.28 crores were returned to the owners.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by senior police officials, had a look at the recovered goods that were artistically displayed at several stalls at the Kanteerava Indoor stadium.

15 more police stations

Mr. Dharam Singh also announced that the Government will approve the proposal sent by the Bangalore police to start 15 new police stations in the city.

Mr. Dharam Singh told presspersons that despite the financial constraints, the Government would clear the proposal for establishing new police stations in the city.

The Chief Minister also said that he would expedite the process of recruiting 2,300 constables for the city. He had recently announced in the Legislative Assembly that the Government was planning to recruit 2,300 constables, mainly for traffic duties in the city.

Mr. Dharam Singh said the Government has released Rs. 15 crores under the Rs. 50-crore reward package for the STF personnel who were engaged in the anti-Veerappan operations. He said the remaining amount would be released shortly.

He said the authorities concerned had not acted under political pressure in transferring a woman sub-inspector of police attached to Upparpet traffic sub-zone, Sathyavathi, who had allegedly misbehaved with an advocate.
