KOCHI: Speakers at a seminar on the `Role of religion in preventing suicide' held at Fort Kochi on Thursday said that religious faith is a deterrent against the urge to self-destruct. They said faith gave confidence and a sense of moral responsibility to the individuals. The seminar was organised by the Maithri suicide prevention helpline to mark its 10th anniversary. The Antony Kochukariyil, episcopal vicar of Kochi Diocese, said the absence of a correct perspective about life was one of the reasons that prompted suicide. Religious organisations could offer a support mechanism to the potential suicide. A close friend to open one's heart to would go a long way in deterring suicide, he said. Pravaajika Sumedhapraana Mataji of the Shree Sarada Mutt, Kochi, said according to the Hindu scriptures, it was the responsibility of the individual to save his/her soul. Leading a noble life and doing good deeds were crucial for this. M.V. Kunjachan, director of Maithri, said the helpline provided a `listening ear' to potential suicide victim so that he/she could unburden himself/herself. It would not offer advice or attempt to solve the potential suicide's problems. Mr. Ahmed Kabir, Ernakulam district president of the Muslim League, and Sajan Mannaali spoke. A. Salim Sait inaugurated the seminar.
