WHAT'S IN IT?: A foreign body found in a soft drink bottle in the city. Photo: S. Mahinsha
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A foreign body that looks like a portion of a mouse's tail was found inside a bottle of the soft drink `Fanta' bought by a person from a shop in the city. A Coca-Cola India spokesperson, however, said in a statement that a physical examination of the bottle showed that it was likely to be a spurious product. Sharafuddin, resident of Pottakuzhy, told mediapersons here that he had bought the bottle from a shop at PMG Junction while returning from work on August 1. Anyone consuming the drink would have been exposed to a lethal health hazard. He said he would file a complaint against the manufacturers of the soft drink under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. It was a matter of added concern that such soft drinks were mostly consumed by youngsters. He urged the authorities concerned to carry out an inspection of factories manufacturing bottled soft drinks and immediately close down those that were not functioning in a hygienic environment. The Coca-Cola spokesman said their repeated requests for the bottle to be sent to a laboratory for product and package integrity tests had been turned down. Only those batches of the product that meet stringent international quality norms were cleared for sale. There was no likelihood of a below standard product being despatched to the market, he added.
