Retired major held on forgery charges

Staff Reporter

"38 rubber stamps of banks and judges recovered from him''

NEW DELHI: A 66-year-old retired Army major has been arrested by the New Delhi police on charges of forging documents and opening bank accounts by faking his identity to obtain a housing loan. The police claim to have recovered 38 rubber stamps of various banks, judges, magistrates, medical practitioners and other officers from his possession. The police received a complaint from LIC Housing Finance Limited this past January alleging that a retired Major, V.S. Sharma, had obtained housing loan to the tune of Rs. 12 lakhs by impersonating as a retired brigadier, V.K. Gaur, to purchase a flat in the Army Welfare Housing Society in Mumbai and was not repaying it.

The fraud came to light when the LIC checked the documents furnished by Sharma. Investigations revealed that he had opened accounts in the name of Brigadier Gaur with Vijaya Bank in Mumbai and Development Credit Bank at Greater Kailash. When the police contacted the brigadier, he told them that Sharma had forged his salary certificate, identity-card and Form No. 16 to obtain loan from the Ghaziabad division of the LIC Housing Finance in the name of his wife, who was introduced as Vinod Kapil, the wife of Brigadier Gaur.

The police learnt that Sharma had taken advance sum of Rs. 1 lakh from one Mohammad Ali of Mumbai, Rs. 4 lakhs from Ravinder Joshi of Lucknow and Rs. 10 lakhs from Santram of Mumbai, for selling the flat. However, he neither sold the flat to them nor returned their money.
