PONDICHERRY: : Carnatic musician M. Balamuralikrishna was conferred the title of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by French Consul General Michel Seguy on Friday. It is the highest title from the French Government that a foreigner can get. Mr. Seguy said it was in recognition of Dr. Balamuralikrishna's contribution to Carnatic music. He said Dr. Balamuralikrishna had taken Carnatic music to a higher plane. . He was one who had been singing from age of eight and had composed hundreds of Kirtanas. "He has been teaching music to the young and not so young." Dr. Balamuralikrishna thanked the French Government for the honour bestowed on him. He later enthralled the audience by rendering one of his popular thillanas in raga Kunthalavarali. He was joined by his disciple Prince Rama Varma in concert. Dr Balamuralikrishna is the recipient of Padmavibhushan and Sangeetha Kalanidhi among several other titles.
