VIJAYAWADA: Over 60 school children had a narrow escape when the school bus in which they were travelling skidded off the road and hung precariously on to a water pipe line that prevented the vehicle from falling into the Bandar canal on Friday. The accident occurred at 9 a.m. when the bus belonging to St. Mary's High School, Kankipadu, was on its way to the school, carrying over 60 children. According to the school authorities, the driver of the bus was forced to move his vehicle towards one side of the narrow road when the driver of an autorickshaw coming in the opposite direction refused to make way for the bus. The bridge is very narrow and in a dilapidated condition. No two vehicles can pass from it at a time. The driver's attempt to push the vehicle towards one side had its front wheel skidding off the road and the bus tilted towards the canal. Eyewitnesses said the escape would not have been possible but for an alert scooterist who advised the bus driver not to take his foot off the brake lest the vehicle might plunge into the canal.
