KOCHI: The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council has decided to hold a meeting of leaders of the Church and the laity to take a common stand for the upcoming panchayat elections. The council meeting, held here from August 8 to 12 and attended by 30 top church leaders of the three three Catholic Rites (Syro-Malabar, Latin and Malankara), sought to form a united Catholic stand in the elections. The council, the most powerful church body of Catholics in the State, discussed several religious and social issues facing the Catholic community. It urged the Government to intensify the investigation into the murder of Fr. Jacob Chittilappilly, vicar of Thuruthipparambu church, in August last. The council said the investigation was dragging on and warned the Government of an agitation by the faithful. Cyril Mar Baselios, Major Archbishop, presided over the five-day meeting.
