CHITRADURGA: The gram panchayats will have the powers to supervise and maintain public distribution system (PDS) in the villages coming under them. In a Government Order dated July 12, the Department of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs said that this change has been brought in accordance with the Belur declaration. According to the order, the gram panchayat secretaries have been instructed to form a `Food Security Committee' consisting of gram panchayat members. As per the new guidelines, a committee consisting of seven PDS cardholders will come into force in every gram panchayat. The supervision over all the fair price shops will be done by the Standing Committee on Social Justice of the zilla panchayat. The distribution of foodgrains will done by the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat at the district level and executive officers of the taluk panchayat at the taluk level. The Deputy Commissioner and tahsildars can distribute foodgrains in the areas that do not come under the purview of taluk and zilla panchayat, an official release said.
