MUMBAI: A young Manipuri woman was hacked to death, and her friend, also from the same north-eastern state, seriously injured in front of the Gateway of India in South Mumbai on Saturday evening, police said. The assailant, Junaid Patel, a city resident, was overpowered by a police patrol on the spot and has been arrested by Colaba police. Said to be mentally unbalanced, Patel (32), earlier in the morning had allegedly attacked his father at home in Oshiwara, a city suburb. Deputy Commissioner of Police Naval Bajaj said the deceased was Nisa Choan (23), and her friend Ngakuimi Ralane (20). Both women were working at the JW Marriot Hotel in upmarket Juhu. Ralane, who suffered an injury on her neck, is under treatment at the Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital in the city. Police described her condition critical. The two women were taking a stroll at around 6.15 p.m. when Patel attacked them with a big knife from behind. Nisa Choan was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The assailant, police said, could be a jilted lover but is in no way connected with his victims.
Security tightened
Following the attack in Mumbai, security was tightened in Imphal at the places where non-Manipuris lived. Sources said security forces were deployed at Lamphel, Konung Mamang and other places to prevent any untoward incident. Patrolling has been intensified. The Manipur Government was in touch with the Maharashtra Government. UNI, PTI
