NEW DELHI: The Central Government on Saturday constituted two committees to implement the assurances given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil in Parliament on a rehabilitation package, employment and compensation to families of the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Home Secretary V.K. Duggal told reporters here that the committees would submit their reports by October 15. K.P. Singh, Special Secretary in the Home Ministry, would head the first committee and D.K. Shankaran, Secretary (Border Management), the second panel. The first committee would look at enhancement of the relief offered to the victims and bring about uniformity in compensation packages. It would oversee payment of additional compensation. The second committee would look into the adequacy of relief and rehabilitation measures given to the victims by various States and Union Territories; work out details of additional relief in terms of livelihood support and employment to eligible family members, including jobs in the paramilitary forces. The committee would also oversee the implementation of additional relief measures. Replying to queries, Mr. Duggal said the Government would soon proceed against politicians against whom the Commission made adverse comments.
