BISHKEK: Kurmanbek Bakiyev was sworn in Sunday as head of Kyrgyzstan after winning the July presidential election of the Central Asian country. At the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Bakiyev took his oath on the country's constitution, saying that ``taking on the functions of the Kyrgyz Republic's President, I swear before the people and the holy mountains to respect and defend the Kyrgyz Republic's constitution and law and guarantee the rights and liberties of all citizens, and fulfill the President's functions, which were given me by popular trust, honourably and tirelessly.'' The ceremony began early on Sunday at the capital's central square with a military parade. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Russian Federation Council's Speaker Sergei Mironov, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and other 5,000 guests attended the ceremony. Mr. Bakiyev won the presidential election on July 10 with nearly 89 per cent of the vote. He has served as acting president since massive protests ousted former President Askar Akayev in March.
