TNSP (Chennai) triumphs

KOVILPATTI: Tamil Nadu Special Police, Chennai, won the 23rd annual State-level hockey tournament conducted by Nethaji Hockey Club defeating defending champion, Central Excise, Chennai, 2-1 in the final at G.K. Stadium here on Sunday.

Police took the lead in the 8th minute with a penalty corner conversion by Devendrakumar. Michael found the equaliser for Central Excise pumping in a penalty corner in the 12th minute. Pradeep scored the winner off a pass from Devendrakumar in the 32nd minute.

In the third place match, Food Corporation of India, Chennai, beat G.K. Motor Finance Hockey Club, Madurai, 6-5 via sudden death. The teams were level 1-1 at end of regulation time and scored four goals each in the tiebreaker.

FCI took the lead in the 7th minute through Venkatesan and G.K. Motors equalised through Johnpaul in the 48th minute.

In the tiebreaker, Suresh, Vijayakumar, Venkatesh, Jegan scored for FCI while John Paul, Karthik, A.P. Vindoh and Britto scored for the Madurai team. In sudden death, Karthik missed for Madurai team, while Suresh succeed for FCI. — Sports Correspondent
