Surya readying himself for new roles

Sudhish Kamath

CHENNAI: As he waits for his next release, `Gajini,' loosely based on a Christopher Nolan movie, Surya is also waiting for his hair to grow: he had to nearly tonsure his head for a schedule of `Gajini.'

But the stills of `Aaru' seem to suggest his hair has already grown.

"I wore a wig for the `Aaru' publicity shoot," laughs the actor. "Even for the Pepsi campaign, I used a wig," he adds.

Surya has literally been in hiding, shying away from public functions, lest people get a glimpse of his `Gajini' look. After all, he worked hard on shaping and toning his body for the action film. "I wanted to have six-pack abs," he says, only in half-jest.

But Tamil magazines let it all out last week, when they published pictures of the actor with intriguing tattoos all over his body.

"We wanted to keep it a secret till the movie releases," admits Surya. `Gajini' is expected to release in the last week of the month.

In the meantime, Surya is busy finalising his next few projects. After the release of `Gajini,' Surya will begin shoot for Hari's `Aaru' opposite Trisha. "I play an agent who gathers people for rallies and political meetings. But it has nothing to do with politics," says the actor.

"It is a rowdy role but there is nothing else which will be predictable about the character. All I can say is that it will be very racy and pack a lot of pace," he adds.

Also in the pipeline is his home production, `Jillunnu Oru Kaadhal,' directed by Gautam's assistant Krishna. "There are two heroines in that — Jyotika and one other girl. It's not a triangle. It's a refreshingly fresh romantic movie with A.R. Rahman's music," says Surya. "We are planning for an April 2006 release".
