PMK to organise agitation on Friday

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi will agitate against the Supreme Court decision doing away with reservation in unaided professional colleges on August 19.

In a statement, party founder S. Ramadoss said the State Government should constitute a high-level committee to go into the functioning of self-financing institutions. The concessions given by the Government to these institutions should be brought out, he said. — Special Correspondent

Raja-Lakshmi Award

CHENNAI: The Raja-Lakshmi Award for 2005 will be presented to Malladi Chandrasekhara Sastry of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh at a function in Hyderabad on November 19.

The annual award, instituted by the Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation to promote arts, literature, science, humanities and other intellectual pursuits and to honour distinguished personalities, carries a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a memento. Also, the Lakshmi-Raja Vaidika Puraskaram 2005 will be given to Sri Kuppa Siva Subrahmanya Avadhani of Guntur district. It carries a citation, a plaque and Rs. 50,000. — Special Correspondent

Special buses to Velankanni

CHENNAI: The State Express Transport Corporation, Tamil Nadu, will be operating special buses to Velankanni from Chennai, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Nagercoil and Bangalore in connection with the Arokiamadha festival till September 10. — Special Correspondent

Clarification

CHENNAI: The National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan has denied that the employees, in a meeting with the Prime Minister, had sought repeal of the Prasar Bharati Act. The federation clarified that it was not a party to the decision. No such decision was taken after deliberation in a democratic and transparent manner. The association, representing 7,500 employees, is pressing for early implementation of the Prasar Bharati Act, said a release from S. Sriraman, zonal secretary. — Special Correspondent

Results published

CHENNAI: Results of the I and II semester B.E./B.Tech examinations (Regulation 2004) held by Anna University in May/June have been published and will be sent to the respective colleges. According to an university release, the last date for applying for revaluation and obtaining photo copy of answer scripts is August 27. Applications are available with the colleges and candidates are instructed to apply only through the college concerned. The results are also hosted on the following websites and candidates can access the results by furnishing their register numbers:

Additional IA flight to Thiruvananthapuram

CHENNAI: Indian Airlines will operate additional flights with Airbus-300 aircraft on the Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram-Sharjah-Chennai sector on August 23 and 25. According to an IA release, flight IC-931 will leave Chennai at 10-45 a.m. and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 11-55 a.m. — Special Correspondent

Commits suicide

RAMANATHAPURAM: A murder case accused, who came out on bail, committed suicide by consuming poison here on Monday. Sources said Balasubramaniam (37) took the extreme step reportedly due to delay in getting the bail. — Staff Reporter

Man murdered

ERODE: The Thingalure police on Monday recovered from LBP canal the body of Palanisamy of Ramanaickkanure, who went missing two days ago. According to the police, Palanisamy had illicit relationship with Rajamani, wife of Duraibalan of the same village. When Duraibalan came to know about it, he reprimanded his wife. Suddenly, Palanisamy went missing. On Monday evening, villagers noticed a gunny bag floating in LBP canal at Dasanpudur. On being informed, the police removed the gunny bag in which they found Palanisamy's body. A search is on for Duraibalan and his brother who are said to be absconding. - Staff Reporter

Dharna staged

SALEM: Members of the Salem Youth Wing of Bharatiya Janata Party BJP staged a dharna near the Colletorate here on Tuesday demanding the State Government to remove references against RSS in the Plus Two History text. The members said that the references gave a wrong impression about the RSS.

One hurt as guard's gun goes off

PERAMBALUR: A double-barrel gun of a security guard at the State Bank of India branch, here, went off accidentally on Tuesday, injuring a customer in his leg. The customer, P. Murugesan (23), was injured when the guard, Nallu (56), touched the trigger while picking up the gun, which slipped from his shoulder and fell down on the ground. Perambalur Town police arrested Nallu and produced him before the Judicial Magistrate, T. T. Arikrishnan, who remanded him in 15 days judicial custody. The gun has been seized. — Staff Reporter

Unreserved ticketing system

Tiruchi: Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) will be introduced in select stations in Tiruchi division soon, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, S. Balachandran, said here on Monday.

Speaking at the Independence Day celebrations organised by the Tiruchi railway division at Kallukuzhi ground, he said the UTS would be introduced, in the first phase, at Tiruchi Junction, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Villupuram, Ariyalur and Pondicherry stations. It would be introduced in other important stations later. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 115.95 feet today. The inflow was 12,746 cusecs and the discharge, 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Blaze in godown

TIRUNELVELI: Fire broke out in a godown in Tirunelveli Town on Sunday. The fire broke out in the godown of Mahadevan at A.P. Mada Street where rollers used in the manufacture of plastic bags were stocked. Fire tenders from Palayamkottai and Pettai rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze. The cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained. — Staff Reporter

Old man's body found

Nagercoil: The police recovered the body of an old man from a well at Karunkal on Tuesday.

Based on a complaint lodged by the public, the police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. They, however, are yet to ascertain the identity of the body.— Staff Reporter

Student dies of burns

Nagercoil: A school student died in a fire mishap on Tuesday.

According to the police sources, a chimney lamp fell on Selva Prakash (10) of Vellamadam near Nagercoil.

He sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to the Government Hospital but he died on the way. — Staff Reporter

One arrested for multiple thefts

Tuticorin: The North police here have solved multiple theft cases with the arrest of one Muthukumar (22) here on Tuesday. Police sources said the accused had stolen some lorry spare parts worth Rs. 8,500 from a workshop of Pitchaiah (34) at Polpettai East on August 2.

Later he stole iron bars weighing 87 kg from another workshop at Karuthapalam on August 8 and went into hiding. The entire stolen materials were recovered from the accused and he was remanded to custody. — Staff Reporter

Man arrested in assault case

Tuticorin: The police on Tuesday arrested a 40-year-old man on the charge of assaulting one Kumar (38) at Tiruchendur on Monday night. Police said Muthusamy assaulted the complainant with a stone after picking up a wordy quarrel with him on issues pertaining to money transactions.

TIRUNELVELI: Power supply in the following areas will be affected on August 16 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in view of maintenance work to be carried out at the Old Pettai sub-station:

Sivaganga: The police arrested an ex-convict on charges of stealing motorcycles and `hundis'.

Sources said Govindaraj, son of Azhagumalai of Piramanur, involved in nine cases at several places.
