An I-Day to remember for ever

K. Raju

TRI-COLOUR DRILL: Schoolgirls staging a cultural performance at the Independence Day celebration in Dindigul on Monday.

DINDIGUL: Even as the reception committee of the 59th Independence Day cultural programmes reduced the time and number of participants of the event, schoolchildren gave a scintillating performance at the show held at the district sports stadium here on Monday, displaying their skills, creativity and teamwork.

S. Pavithra of St. Joseph's Girls Matriculation School shot a balloon with an air rifle tied at the tip of 30-foot high pole and unveiled a welcome banner to greet the dignitaries on the dais. She hit the target on her first shot with perfect aim.

Girls from St. Joseph's Girls Higher Secondary School, Annamalaiar HSS, Government Girls High School and SMBM Matriculation HSS, all in multicoloured attire, performed an eye-catching dance programme with perfect teamwork and coordination. Their well-choreographed dance sequences expressed patriotism, national integrity and religious harmony lucidly. As an interlude to a dance sequence, a group of boys from SMBM Matric HSS brought out the pathetic incidence of V.O. Chidambaram pulling an oil press in jail during the freedom struggle. While khakhi-clad policemen beat Chidambaram, the person portraying VOC pulled a real manual oil press on the ground. The show was well received by the audience.

Another team of boys representing Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Palani Road, proved that they were not inferior to any private or aided school in giving a cultural performance. Thirty-eight boys had the audience seated at the tip of their chairs with their hair-raising acrobatics. The human twisters swirling at high speed was a classic example of balance and coordination of body and mind. Quick somersaults, twists and turns in the air by young and enthusiastic gymnasts proved a feast for the eyes. To cap it all, a performance in which the national flag was hoisted atop a three-storey human wall gave the audience something to remember for a long time.

On the whole, it was an enthusiastic combined with zeal, ambition and team spirit.
