Gallantry awards for 17 Delhi policemen

NEW DELHI: Seventeen Delhi Police officers and personnel have been honoured with the President's Police Medals for Gallantry and the Police Medals for Gallantry on the occasion of Independence Day.

Sub-Inspector Mehtab Singh (posthumous) and Assistant Sub-Inspector Devender of the Special Cell have been rewarded the President's Police Medal for Gallantry for eliminating a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant from Pakistan at Najafgarh in June 2003.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajbir Singh and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma have been awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry for neutralising a Jaish-e-Mohammad module in August 2003. In that operation, three militants were arrested, while two others were killed in a subsequent encounter.

The police had also recovered a large cache of arms and ammunitions from the militants.

Sub-Inspector Rahul and Assistant Sub-Inspectors Vikram and Narender of the Special Cell have been awarded for eliminating two LeT militants in an encounter at Tughlaqabad Fort in December 2002 and recovering arms and ammunition.

Sub-Inspectors Arvind, Dharmender, Umesh and Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhoop Singh get the Police Medal for Gallantry for liquidating a Hizbul Mujahideen (Peer Pajan Regiment) militants at Kalkaji in December 2003, while Sub-Inspector Pawan Kumar and Assistant Sub-Inspector Rishipal were awarded for killing two alleged Bihar-based criminals in an encounter on Mathura Road in April last year.

Sub-Inspectors Ramesh, Naresh, Harbir and Assistant Sub-Inspector Pramod Kumar of the Crime and Railways have also been awarded for their extraordinary contribution in nabbing dreaded criminals.
