Jamia Millia students hold demonstration

NEW DELHI: Creating an embarrassing situation for Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hassan some students today staged a demonstration against him during a function presided over by the Foreign Minister, K. Natwar Singh.

The students were protesting against the shifting of SRK Hostel, claiming that their new accommodation had half the capacity and was also bereft of several facilities. Nearly 20 students protested outside the V-C's office as the Minister attended the Syed Sajjad Zaheer Memorial Lecture delivered by noted writer, poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar in the adjoining Edward Said Hall. Mr Akhtar in speech traced the history of the Progressive Writers' Movement and outlined the socio-political reasons behind its rise and the changing literary ethos that was to spell its early demise.

According to a student, the new hostel has only 57 rooms compared to the earlier one that had 101 rooms and it also does not have a common room, reading room or dining room. Jamia spokesperson Rakshanda Jalil in a statement said the hostel was shifted to a new site as the earlier building had become a traffic hazard, suffered from noise pollution and its drainage and other basic facilities were proving to be inadequate. --PTI
