NEW DELHI: Over 400 visually- impaired people, under the aegis of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB), were detained by the police on Parliament Street on Tuesday when they tried to march towards the 7 Race Course residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to register their protest against non-implementation of their demands. They were later released.

The NFB and the AICB have been demanding certain amendments to the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995, review of the education policy to include people with disabilities therein, and replacement of the incumbent director of the National Institute for Visually Handicapped at Dehra Dun with a visually impaired director.

A delegation of the NFB-AICB was later allowed to meet the Social Justice and Empowerment Minister, Meira Kumar, to whom the protesters submitted their memorandum.
