Bangalore triumphs

BANGALORE: : Bangalore District annexed the Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA) rolling trophy, winning the inter-district football tournament here with a 1-0 verdict against Dakshina Kannada. The winners also pocketed a purse of Rs 10,000. Dakshina Kannada had to rest content with the runners-up trophy and a cash prize of Rs 5000.

A marginally larger gathering expected a keen contest. But it was not to be as the Dakshina Kannada lads looked overawed and at times even insipid. The attack from the flanks that fetched them goals galore in the league stage and even in the semifinal was just not forthcoming and the few sorties down the middle did not prove fruitful.

Bangalore did few notches better than its semifinal showing against Shimoga, but still far below its best. The absence of Asif Iqbal, out with two yellow cards, was a telling blow for the host and with Ramesh and Pradeep Kumar too failing to keep the tempo going there was hardly any worthwhile moves from the right. In the 35th minute Choudhary hemmed in by the defence backpassed to his captain and Rakesh Singh wasted little time in bulging the near corner with a fine 30 yarder.
