Bangalore: It proved to be a batsman's day out in the KSCA all-India invitation MRF Trophy tournament in progress here on Tuesday. Five centuries were clobbered while the lone bowler to strike a rich vein was Chemplast's L. Balaji who bagged six wickets though ONGC raced ahead with Sandeep Sharma's 138 (214b, 17 x 4, 1 x 6). ONGC scored 291 for eight when bad light curtailed the opening day at the JIRS Ground. The tale of merry runs had its opening script at the Chinnaswamy Stadium as New South Wales (NSW) fired against Canara Bank. Openers Edward Cowan (133, 197b, 14 x 4, 5 x 6) and Craig Simmons (49) shared a 116-run partnership. And the good work continued as Cowan then teamed up with another centurion Mathew Phelps (119, 152b, 10 x 4, 3 x 6) to build a 112-run second-wicket partnership. Later Phelps and Thornley (79 n.o.) got together and strung a 126-run third-wicket partnership while the Canara Bank fielders went on a leather hunt. Eventually NSW posted 403 for four in the stipulated 100 overs. In another match, Robin Uthappa's unbeaten 153 (136b, 23 x 4, 1x6) guided KSCA to 248 for three against Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) while Shashan Nag's 155 (286b, 19 x 4, 1 x 6) helped Hyderabad CA post 352 for seven against Baroda CA. The scores: At Chinnaswamy Stadium: NSW 403 for 4 in 100 overs (Edward Cowan 133, Mathew Phelps 119, Dominic Thornley 79 n.o., Craig Simmons 49) vs Canara Bank. At IAF Ground: Hyderabad CA 352 for 7 in 100 overs (Shashank Nag 155, Arjun Yadav 61, Yusuf Pathan 4 for 88) vs Baroda CA four for no loss in 0.2 overs. At RSI Ground: KSCA 248 for 3 in 47 overs (Robin Uthappa 153 n.o.) vs CAB. At JIRS: ONGC 291 for 8 in 84.1 overs (Sandeep Sharma 138, Amit Mishra 49, L. Balaji 6 for 96) vs Chemplast. Sports Reporter
