St. Andrews, St. Pious win

HYDERABAD: : St. Andrews and St. Pious clinched the boys' and girls' crowns respectively in the Dr. Emily Emanuel inter-school basketball tournament here on Tuesday.

In the finals, St. Patricks subdued Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet 44-33 and St. Pious crushed St. Anthony's 28-9.

Former Indian basketball captain Mohd. Rizwan, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

Present on the occasion were G.M. Sampath Kumar, Chairman, Technical Commission, Basketball Federation of India, former Test cricketers Noel David and M.V. Narasimha Rao, the latter having led Hyderabad to only its second Ranji Trophy triumph.

Powered by towering pivot and player of the tournament, Ashley Zachariah (26 points), the St. Andrews forward line made the most of a brittle HPS defence, severely handicapped by an ailing Vikramaditya Padhye. Shrewd scheming by Hamza Saleem ensured the host was never short of scoring opportunities. For the winner, Aditya Ramanathan, also a pivot, had nine points against his name.

Forward Vijay Raj with 14 points from zero angle shooting and the short and stocky Karan Challani found the net most frequently, the latter on two occasions from outside the `D.'

St. Pious spearheaded by India camper Anjana (adjudged player of the tournament), Preethi and Swetha steamrollered St. Anthony's in the girls final. Aditya and Preethi were declared players of the final.

The results: finals:

Boys: St. Andrews 44 (Ashley Zachariah 26, Aditya Ramanathan 9) bt HPS Begumpet 33 (Vijay Raj 14, Karan Challani 10, Vidhur 7).

Girls: St. Pious 28 (G. Preethi 11, L. Anjana 7) bt St. Anthony's 9.
